Job Description

The role of the Mechanical Buyer will be pivotal to Irwin M&E’s ongoing growth and success. The purpose of the role is to manage all aspects of purchasing to efficiently and cost-effectively support organisational operations. It will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Request, collate and analyse quotations for appropriate materials
  • Place orders with suitable suppliers for specified materials ensuring goods are delivered on the required date and purchased at the most competitive rates, and within budget
  • Ensure quality and performance of ordered materials in line with required standards and consolidate purchases of materials to achieve maximum economic benefit
  • Liaise with Contract Managers and inform other departments of all relevant information regarding changes in materials, major price movements, delivery lead times and individual supply situations
  • Build and maintain good relationships with new and existing suppliers
  • Develop strategies to make sure that cost savings and supplier performance targets are met, or exceeded
  • Undertake value for money reviews of existing contracts and arrangements
  • Keep a constant check on stock levels
  • Produce reports and statistics on spending and saving
  • Control and reconcile van stock levels


  • Must have previous experience in a similar role
  • Possess financial acumen
  • High competency level in MS Office applications
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to demonstrate good team ethos
